With the rise of teen pregnancies going on in the world, why do we really think it is appropriate to give these teen moms their own TV show? With the success of the popular MTV show 16 and Pregnant, the aim of the show was for us as the audience to be witnessing the struggles of coping as a teenage parent. But instead the show has created a backlash with viewers who argue that the show is trying to glamorise teen pregnancy. The idea of the show was to show how young girls with babies have to give up so much of their lives. For example, you see how the girls have to give up school and their education to sacrifice for their baby so much. Meanwhile, their boyfriends usually go with another girl and are never around to help them and the baby so that shows the truth to hopelessly in love teenage girls. In some opinion it is good for young girls who haven’t had children so that they can see that it is not easy.
They do show some of the hard parts, but pretty quickly move from those into the more romantic/fun parts. If there is a fight with the baby's dad, the scene would suddenly cut to proposal scene. When does something like that really happen in real life for teenage parents? I do think they show some hard stuff but like every other reality show you only see about 20 minutes of their lives out of a week and only the parts that the producers want to show you so you have to factor that into it. They need to understand that not all teen moms are like Bristol Palin. Who has way more resources than the average teen mom and she still has the nerve to say how her life is really hard and she’s so stressed all the time. She should try living without her family’s money or the money she makes from TV appearances before talking to teen moms about the hardships. I’m not saying that because of this show there will be more teen moms in the world, it is simply that it is wrong to turn these young un-educated pregnant teenagers into ‘TV stars’. If you already don't want a baby it shows you that things are hard when you are a teen mother, so it's not convincing girls to go out and get pregnant.
Unfortunately with all the success of the show, the young moms are being placed on the front covers of magazines and are outrageously being seen as celebrities. They have become celebrities in their own right which is sending out the wrong message to young viewers, like it is alright to be 16 and Pregnant because you can get a TV show and get famous. The girls who are featured on the show even have their own fan groups on Facebook, which proves that this show has backfired majorly with the wrong kind of outcome.
My opinion article on Teen Mom was chosen because it is something that I have a strong opinion on because the percentage on teen pregnancies is always increasing and I wanted to state my opinion on the MTV Show Teen Mom. This hit TV show has been criticised for being in favour of teen pregnancies and I just wanted to say what I thought on it. I managed to balance out my opinion article by saying how it can help teens but it portrays it in a sugar coated way, it doesn’t show the true hardships on being a mum.
